How do I get the world map to start filling in?
Just walk around. The map writes itself as you explore, revealing chunks you've visited in each world, dimension, or server separately. There's no button to press to begin mapping.
Why is my world map blank in a new area?
The map only records terrain you've actually been near, so unexplored regions stay blank until you travel through them. Move into the area and the chunks will fill in automatically.
Does Xaero's World Map work without Xaero's Minimap?
Yes, it runs as a standalone mod. It's designed to pair well with Xaero's Minimap, but the fullscreen map functions on its own.
How do I move around and zoom the map?
Open the map with M, drag with your mouse to pan, and use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out like a web map. The interface is interactive, so you can also click on it.
Why does my map look different on each server or world?
The map is stored per world, per dimension, and per server, so each one has its own separate map data. That's why exploring one world doesn't reveal another.
How do I make the map look like vanilla paper maps?
Switch to Vanilla Maps mode, which renders the world map in the style of vanilla paper maps. You can toggle between surface, cave, and vanilla modes depending on what you want to see.
My map isn't updating after I change texture packs. What's wrong?
Changing texture packs updates the whole world map, not just newly explored chunks, so give it a moment to re-render. If it still looks stale, try reopening the map or reloading the world.
Does the map support cave dimensions and the Nether?
Yes, cave dimensions are supported similarly to the Nether, with their own map layers. Use the cave map mode to view underground terrain properly.
Will this mod slow down my game or server?
The world map is client-side, so it doesn't add load to the server. Performance impact is generally light, though very large explored maps can use more memory over time.
Does it work on Realms and MultiWorld servers?
Yes, it supports Minecraft Realms, including Realms with MultiWorld setups. It also handles automatic MultiWorld and Lilypadded servers, so maps stay separated correctly.
How do I open the world map?
Press M to open the fullscreen world map. Press M again (or Esc) to close it and return to the game.
Why is my map blank or only showing a small area?
The map writes itself as you explore, so areas you haven't visited yet stay empty. Walk or fly around to fill in new chunks, and previously explored terrain stays saved for that world, dimension or server.
Is the map different for each world and server?
Yes, the map is stored separately for every world, dimension and server, so your singleplayer world and each multiplayer server keep their own explored terrain. This also means you can't accidentally mix up maps between worlds.
Does the world map work on servers and Realms?
Yes, it works in Singleplayer, Multiplayer and on Realms, and it supports MultiWorld and Lilypadded-style server setups automatically. Each world or dimension you visit on a server gets its own map.
How do I switch to cave mode or the Nether view?
Use the dimension/cave mode controls in the map interface to switch between the surface, cave dimensions and the Nether-style view. Cave mode works like the Nether map, showing the terrain layer you're currently in.
Do I need Xaero's Minimap to use the World Map?
No, the World Map works as a standalone mod, which is why it's available separately to keep the Minimap lightweight. However, using both together gives you a much better experience, including shared waypoints.
Why can't I see my waypoints on the world map?
Waypoints are shared between Xaero's Minimap and the World Map, so make sure both mods are installed if you expect them to sync. Check that the waypoint's dimension matches the map you're viewing, since waypoints are per-dimension.
Will the world map hurt my performance or FPS?
The map only renders when you open it, so it has minimal impact during normal gameplay. If you notice lag while the map is open, try zooming in or reducing the amount of terrain shown at once.
