Understanding Tier Upgrades
Sophisticated Storage
chests,
barrels, and
shulker boxes come in tiers: Basic (wood), Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, and Netherite. Each tier increases the number of storage slots and the maximum stack multiplier. You do not craft a new
chest from scratch — you upgrade the one you already have, keeping its contents and any installed upgrades.
Applying the Upgrade
1. Craft the appropriate tier upgrade item (for example, a
Basic to Iron Tier Upgrade to go from a Basic
chest to an
Iron chest).
2. Place your existing
chest or
barrel in the world and open its interface.
3. In the upgrade slots on the right side of the GUI, place the tier upgrade item.
4. The
chest immediately converts to the new tier, retaining all stored items and previously installed upgrade modules.
You can also combine upgrades in sequence — Basic to Copper, then Copper to Diamond — or use a direct jump upgrade like Basic to Diamond if you have the materials. Tier upgrades are consumed on use, so you need one per
chest. If you want to move a
chest without losing contents, break it with a
Storage Tool or a normal tool while sneaking; the contents stay inside.
