Placing the Modems
Craft a
Wireless Modem and place it on the side of a
Computer,
Advanced Computer, or Turtle. Right-click the modem to open its interface and note the channel number. Place a second
Wireless Modem on another
Computer or Turtle. Set both modems to the same channel so they share a network.
For cross-dimensional or long-range links, use an
Ender Modem instead. Craft it and attach it the same way.
Ender Modems communicate across dimensions without needing line of sight, which makes them useful for linking a base
Computer to a remote Turtle.
Linking Computers
On each
Computer, open the Lua shell and call rednet.open("top") (replace top with the side the modem is attached to). Then send a message from one machine with rednet.send(id, "hello") and receive it on the other with rednet.receive(). Both machines must have their modems opened on the same side name.
If you need a wired link instead, craft
Networking Cable and a
Wired Modem. Run the cable between two
Wired Modems attached to
Computers. Wired networks do not need channels and are immune to interference, but the cable must connect the two modems directly.
Testing the Link
Run a short script on the receiving
Computer that loops rednet.receive() and prints the sender ID and message. Send a test string from the other machine. If nothing arrives, confirm both modems are on the same channel, both rednet.open calls succeeded, and no other program is holding the modem.
