There's no single progression path, so just play normally and craft whatever catches your eye. A good first step is making a Wrench or some Rope, since both are cheap and immediately useful. From there, try Pink Gold or the food items to branch out.

Rope is crafted from string and can be placed to climb up or descend down safely. Place it against a wall or hang it from a ledge, then hold the climb key while touching it. It's great for caving and building tall structures without fall damage.

Pink Gold is made by combining gold ingots and copper ingots in a crafting grid. You then use it in a smithing table to upgrade iron gear into stronger pink gold versions. It's a mid-tier upgrade between iron and diamond.
