20 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I get my first familiar?
Your first familiar is usually available from the start without unlocking. Open your inventory and look for the familiar equip slot (similar to armor slots) to select and equip your initial companion.
How do I switch between different Familiars?
Access the familiar selection interface through your inventory or a keybind (check your controls settings). You can swap between any familiars you've unlocked, and only one can be active at a time.
What's the difference between passive and active familiar skills?
Passive skills work automatically while your familiar is equipped (like healing or damage reduction), while active skills require you to trigger them manually, usually through a keybind or by meeting specific conditions in combat.
How do I unlock Familiars I don't have?
Some familiars require you to spend Experience Points at an unlock interface, while others unlock through achievements. Check the familiar's unlock requirements in the mod interface to see which method applies.
Do I need to download multiple files or just the API?
You need the Familiars API as a base, then download at least one Familiar Pack (like DefaultMobs or Extended) to get actual familiars to use. Different packs provide different familiar options.
Can I use multiple familiar packs at the same time?
Yes, you can install multiple packs together and they will coexist. All familiars from each pack will be available to unlock and equip.
Will my familiar protect me from mobs automatically?
Familiars with combat abilities will attack hostile mobs that threaten you, but their effectiveness depends on their individual skills and stats. Some familiars are better at protection than others.
Can Familiars die or be permanently lost?
Familiars cannot be permanently lost—they're equipped items, not separate entities. If your familiar takes damage, it will recover over time or you can switch to another familiar temporarily.
Why aren't my Familiars appearing or working?
Make sure you've installed both the API and at least one Familiar Pack, and that they're for the correct Minecraft version. Check that a familiar is actually equipped in your inventory slot.
Do Familiars affect server performance or lag?
Familiars are client-side companions and have minimal performance impact. If you experience lag, it's more likely from having many packs installed or other mods rather than familiars themselves.
