Better Ping Display Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on ping numbers in the player list?
Just install the mod and open the player list (Tab by default) — ping numbers appear automatically next to each player's name. There's no toggle needed to enable the numbers themselves; only the extra options like ping bars and auto colors are configurable.
Why do I still see the vanilla ping bars instead of numbers?
The mod draws numbers by default and hides the bars, so if you see bars, check that renderPingBars isn't set to true in betterpingdisplay.json. Setting it to false restores the number-only display.
Can I show both the ping number and the vanilla ping bars at the same time?
Yes — set renderPingBars to true in the config file. The mod will then draw the default Minecraft bars alongside the numeric ping.
How do I change the color of the ping text?
Edit pingTextColor in betterpingdisplay.json and set it to a hex color value. This only applies when autoColorPingText is false, since auto coloring overrides the fixed color.
What does autoColorPingText actually do?
When enabled, the mod colors each player's ping number based on their latency — low ping shows one color and high ping shows another, so laggy players stand out. When disabled, all ping numbers use the single color set in pingTextColor.
Where is the config file and what is it called?
The config file is named betterpingdisplay.json and lives in your Minecraft config folder. You can edit it with any text editor while the game is closed.
Do I need to install this mod on the server too?
No — this is a client-side mod. The server doesn't need it installed, and it works fine on vanilla servers.
Will this mod work on a vanilla server or on servers that don't allow mods?
Yes, it works on vanilla servers because it only reads ping data the client already receives. It doesn't send anything extra to the server, so it's generally safe on servers that restrict mods.
Does Better Ping Display affect my FPS or performance?
No — it only adds a small text element to the player list, so the performance impact is negligible. It doesn't touch rendering, world data, or networking beyond what the client already does.
I edited the config but nothing changed — what did I do wrong?
Make sure the game is fully closed when you edit betterpingdisplay.json, since the mod may overwrite your changes on exit. Also double-check that your JSON is valid (commas, quotes, and brackets), because a broken file will be ignored or reset.
