Build Structures That Look Good in Grayscale
Prioritize Texture Over Color
In grayscale, block texture becomes your primary design tool. Blocks with detailed surfaces—like deepslate, blackstone, and wood variants—read clearly in black and white. Smooth blocks like concrete or terracotta lose definition. Mix textured and smooth blocks intentionally to create visual rhythm.
Use Contrast and Value
Grayscale converts colors to shades of gray based on brightness. Dark blocks (deepslate, obsidian) and light blocks (white concrete, snow) create strong contrast. Build with this in mind: use naturally dark and light materials to define structure, rather than relying on color separation.
Layer Materials for Depth
Combine blocks of different textures and values:
- Pair rough stone with smooth slabs
- Alternate between dark and light material bands
- Use stairs and walls to break up flat surfaces
This layering creates visual interest without color.
Test Your Design
Build a small section first with the shader active. Step back and assess whether the structure reads clearly. If details disappear, add texture variety or adjust material brightness. Grayscale builds often benefit from slightly more complex geometry than color builds.
