Building and Mining with High Contrast Lighting
Visibility Challenges Underground
Ugly High Contrast Shaders makes underground mining significantly harder because shadows become absolute black. Standard torches provide light, but the harsh contrast means areas just outside the light radius disappear completely. There's no gradual lighting falloff—it's bright or black.
Effective Mining Strategies
Place light sources more frequently than usual. Space torches closer together to eliminate dead zones. Consider using multiple light types (torches, lanterns, glowstone) to create overlapping lit areas.
When building, work in daylight or create an enclosed, well-lit workspace. The extreme shadows make it hard to judge block placement and alignment. Bright areas help, but position yourself to avoid looking directly at overexposed surfaces.
For large projects, build temporary scaffolding with integrated lighting. This keeps your work area visible and reduces the disorienting effect of harsh contrast.
Underground bases become atmospheric but challenging. Plan lighting carefully—dark corners will be genuinely pitch black. This can make navigation confusing, so mark paths with consistent light placement or use contrasting block colors to guide yourself through your base.
