Understand How Eye Adaptation Affects Your Gameplay
What Eye Adaptation Actually Does
Realistic Dark Shaders doesn't add new light sources or change how blocks emit light. Instead, it simulates pupil dilation—your character's eyes gradually open wider in darkness to gather more light, just like human eyes do. This creates a gradual transition rather than an instant brightness change.
Practical Effects During Play
In darkness:
- Your vision improves slowly over time, not instantly
- The longer you stay in one lighting condition, the more adapted you become
- Sudden exposure to bright light (like a torch or sunrise) temporarily washes out your vision
In caves and forests:
- Shadows become more visible and defined
- The contrast between lit and unlit areas feels more natural
- Distant details gradually become visible as your eyes adjust
How This Changes Your Strategy
1. Plan ahead. Don't rush into darkness—give yourself time to adapt
2. Use light deliberately. A single torch becomes more valuable when your adapted eyes can see by its glow
3. Expect transitions. Moving between day and night, or in and out of caves, will feel different than vanilla Minecraft
The Intended Experience
This mechanic encourages slower, more thoughtful exploration. You're not fighting against darkness with instant brightness—you're working with realistic vision to create an immersive, atmospheric experience.
