Reduce Shadow Quality First

Shadows are performance-heavy. In shader settings, lower the shadow resolution or distance before touching other features. This often provides the biggest frame rate boost with minimal visual impact.

Disable or Reduce Volumetric Clouds

Look for volumetric cloud settings and reduce their density or resolution. You can also disable cloud shadows if they're causing lag. Clouds still render but with less computational overhead.

Lower Global Illumination Bounces

Global illumination creates realistic light bouncing but costs performance. Reduce the number of bounces or samples in the GI settings. The effect remains visible but processes faster.

Adjust Render Distance Carefully

Shader effects apply across your entire view distance. Lowering render distance reduces the area shaders must process. Start with moderate distances and increase only if your frame rate allows.

Monitor Frame Rate

Use F3 to display performance metrics. Aim for stable frame rates during normal gameplay. If you dip below your target, disable one feature at a time and test until you find the right balance.

Use Iris for Better Performance

Iris typically offers better optimization than OptiFine. If performance is critical, consider switching loaders.
