The Hammer Tiers

Hammers come in seven materials: Wooden Hammer, Stone Hammer, Iron Hammer, Golden Hammer, Diamond Hammer, Netherite Hammer, and Tungsten Hammer. Each is a crafting_shaped recipe using the matching vanilla material plus sticks. The Nether Hammer is a separate item and is not part of the standard tier ladder.

What Hammers Do

Hammers are your area-mining tool. Swing one at stone, ore, or brick and it breaks a wider footprint than a pickaxe, which is why the Tungsten Hammer and Netherite Hammer are the endgame choices for clearing dungeon walls. Bring the hammer that matches your current tier — a Wooden Hammer is fine for dirt and soft stone, but you want at least an Iron Hammer before you start carving through Soul Bricks, Purpur Bricks, or Chiseled End Stone Bricks.

Progression Tips

Upgrade in order: wooden, stone, iron, golden, diamond, netherite, tungsten. Netherite requires a smithing_transform, so have a smithing table ready. The Tungsten Hammer is the top of the ladder and pairs well with the tungsten armor set. Keep a spare hammer in your ender chest — losing one mid-dungeon is painful.
