Taming

Rats are tamed by feeding them Cheese. Hold Cheese in your hand and approach a wild rat; feed it repeatedly until hearts appear. Once tamed, a rat follows you and can be assigned to a Rat Cage. Decorated Rat Cage is the upgraded cage variant for keeping tamed rats.

Breeding

Two tamed rats breed when each is fed Cheese. Feed one rat, then the other, and they produce a baby rat. Breed specific colors by using the colored hammocks and tubes as housing: Black Rat Hammock, Blue Rat Hammock, Brown Rat Hammock, Cyan Rat Hammock, and matching Igloo and Tube variants. These colored housing blocks are associated with rat color variants.

Housing and Upgrades

Place a Rat Cage or Decorated Rat Cage to store rats. Hammocks, Igloos, and Tubes are the three housing types, each in Black, Blue, Brown, and Cyan. Rats assigned to these blocks stay put and can be interacted with for their tasks.

Feeding and Care

Keep a steady supply of Cheese. Cooked Rat is a food item but not for taming. Contaminated Food and Diseased Garbage are hazards — keep them away from your rats. Bundle of Sweet-Smelling Herbs is a rat-related item used in recipes. Assorted Vegetables and Confit Byaldi are food items you can produce.

Special Rats

Demon Rat Spawn Egg, Black Death Spawn Egg, Feral Ratlantean Spawn Egg, and Flying Dutchrat Spawn Egg spawn special rat types. These are not tamed with plain Cheese — they are encountered as enemies or special entities.
