How to Use Descriptions to Compare Enchanted Gear Before Crafting or Trading
Comparing Two Items Quickly
When you are deciding between two swords, pickaxes, or armor pieces, the descriptions let you judge them without leaving the game. Place both items in your inventory so they are adjacent, then hover each one in turn. Read the description under every enchantment line and note which effects stack, which conflict, and which are simply better for your situation.
Checking Villager Trades
Villager librarians sell enchanted books, and the trade screen shows the book's enchantment. Hover the book in the trade slot to read its description before handing over emeralds. This prevents buying a book whose effect you did not actually want, and helps you spot high-value enchantments like Mending or Fortune at a glance.
Sorting Chests and Shulkers
If you keep enchanted books in storage, the descriptions make sorting much faster. Open the chest and hover each book; the tooltip tells you what it does so you can group similar books together. You can also use the descriptions to decide which duplicate books to keep and which to feed into a grindstone for XP.
Planning an Enchantment Setup
Before building an enchantment room, hover the books you already own to see which effects you still need. This turns a vague shopping list into a concrete one based on what each enchantment actually provides.
