Performance Equivalence
Charcoal blocks and coal blocks burn for identical durations in furnaces. There is no performance difference—both provide the same fuel value and burn time. Your choice between them depends entirely on availability and convenience.
Renewable vs. Limited
The key distinction is renewability. Coal requires mining coal ore, a finite resource that eventually depletes. Charcoal comes from smelting wood, which regenerates through tree farming. In long-term survival, charcoal blocks offer unlimited fuel potential.
Storage and Crafting
Both blocks compress nine individual pieces into one block, providing identical storage efficiency. However, charcoal is easier to produce—you only need a furnace and wood, whereas coal requires finding and mining ore.
Practical Choice
Early game: Use coal blocks if you find coal ore quickly. Mid to late game: Switch to charcoal blocks once you've established a tree farm. For pure convenience and sustainability, charcoal blocks are the superior long-term choice, especially if you're planning extensive smelting or cooking operations.
