How to Handle a Zombie Horde Without Dying

Read the Situation First

Hordes in Zombie Awareness form when enough zombies converge on a target — often you. Fighting them head-on in the open is how players die. Your goal is to break the group up or avoid becoming the target.

Tactics That Work

• Move, do not stand still. Backing away while fighting keeps you from being surrounded.
• Use chokepoints. A doorway, tunnel, or narrow gap forces zombies to come at you one at a time.
• Break line of sight to stop new zombies from joining. Duck behind terrain or into a building.
• Use water. Crossing a river or standing in shallow water disrupts tracking and slows pursuers.
• Do not fight near your base if you can help it. Lead the horde away, then circle back once it disperses.
• Have an escape plan before you engage. Know which direction you will retreat.

After the Fight

Collect drops quickly, then move. Noise from combat draws more zombies. Repair any damage to your defenses and re-light dark spots before the next night.
