How to Survive and Light Up Large Caverns in YUNG's Better Caves

The big open caverns in YUNG's Better Caves are dramatic but dangerous: their size means mobs spawn far from your light and can drop on you from ledges you never saw. Surviving them is mostly about light and vertical awareness.

Light the space before you enter it

  • Do not walk into an unlit cavern. Stand at the entrance and throw torches or place them along the wall as far as you can reach.
  • Work in a grid: light the floor, then the walls, then any ledges above. Mobs spawn in the dark gaps between your torches.
  • Bring far more light than you think you need. A single large cavern can eat a full stack.

Handle the verticality

  • Never walk off a ledge you cannot see the bottom of. Place a torch and look down first.
  • Carry a water bucket to break long falls, and place it before you jump, not after.
  • Watch the ceiling. Cave spiders and other mobs can be above you in the dark.

Deal with lava and water

  • Lava lakes glow and are visible from a distance; approach slowly and bridge over rather than jumping.
  • Water flowing from the surface often marks a safe route down or a way back up.

Secure a base camp

Pick a well-lit junction and wall it off with a door or blocks. Store spare torches, food, and blocks there so a long expedition has a safe fallback point.
