Creating directional intersections

Copper rails excel at building compact sorting systems because each rail can enforce a single direction without complex redstone logic. By placing copper rails at different angles, you can create natural flow control.

Layout strategy

1. At your intersection point, place copper rails in the directions you want minecarts to go

2. Each copper rail should be oriented to push minecarts toward a different destination

3. Power only the copper rail(s) matching your current sorting need using a separate redstone circuit

4. Minecarts will only move along powered copper rails; unpowered rails act like golden rails

Advantages over vanilla rails

Since copper rails don't share redstone power with other rail types, you can control each direction independently without interference. This means you can build multi-directional intersections where only one path is active at a time, perfect for item sorting or minecart routing systems without needing repeaters or complex pulse logic.
