Gather the Base Materials

The entry point into the mod is the leather backpack, so your first job is collecting enough leather. Cows, mooshrooms, and horses are the usual sources; a looting-enchanted weapon speeds this up considerably. You will also need a crafting table and, depending on the recipe layout, some string or similar binding material. Check the recipe in JEI/REI once you have the mod loaded so you can see the exact grid shape rather than guessing.

Craft and Equip

Open your crafting table and arrange the leather and binding items in the pattern shown by your recipe viewer. The result is the standard backpack, which gives you three rows of portable storage. Once crafted, it sits in your inventory like any other item. Right-click it (or use the mod's configured keybind) to open its inventory. You can then drag stacks in and out just like a chest.

First Practical Tips

  • Rename the backpack in an anvil before you start filling it, so you can tell it apart from later tiers.
  • Keep the backpack in your hotbar or inventory rather than a chest; it only works as portable storage while you carry it.
  • Do not fill every slot immediately. Leave room so you can pick up drops while exploring.

With one leather backpack made, you have the foundation for every upgrade tier the mod offers.
