You can buy the backpack directly from a Wandering Trader instead of crafting it.

What happens when the backpack gets too full?

Your character's walking speed slows down, losing 10% of speed for every 27 slots you fill.

Can I customize the appearance of my backpack?

Yes, you can change the color of your bag using normal dyes and attach a sleeping bag or bed to the outside.
