Nyctography FAQ

10 questions players actually ask, answered.

How do I start using Nyctography?
Craft a Nyctography banner pattern using paper and dye, or buy one from a wandering trader. Once you have the pattern, place it in a Loom along with a banner and dye to create banners with secret symbols. You can also use the mod's commands to apply the secret font to signs, books, chat, and item names without crafting anything.
How do I read the secret font?
The Nyctography font replaces letters with dots and lines arranged around a square. You'll need to memorize the dot and line patterns for each letter to decode messages, or keep the alphabet guide open while reading. Numbers are replaced with specific consonants (like Z for 0 and B for 1), so you read the consonant to figure out which number it represents.
Can I use Nyctography in regular chat?
Yes, use the command `/bookshelf font say nyctography:nyctography ` to send a chat message in the secret font that all players can see. Other players need the mod installed to read it; without the mod, they'll see garbled text or the default font.
What do the special symbols like - and & do?
Special symbols are shortcuts: use a dash (-) to write "The", an ampersand (&) for "And", a hashtag (#) to mark that the next symbols are numbers, an asterisk (*) to mark letters, and an at symbol (@) to write a date. These save space on signs and make your secret messages more compact.
How do I put secret text on a sign or chest?
Use the command `/bookshelf font block nyctography:nyctography X Y Z` where X Y Z are the coordinates of the block you want to change. The text on that sign, chest, or other labeled block will appear in the Nyctography font.
Can I hide a message inside a book?
Yes, write your message in a book normally, then use the font commands or manually apply the Nyctography font to the book's text. The book will display your message in the secret font when opened, and only players with the mod can read it.
Do I need to memorize the entire alphabet to use this mod?
You only need to memorize the alphabet if you want to read secret messages without help. To write messages, you just type normally and the mod converts your text automatically—you don't need to know the dot and line patterns.
Will Nyctography work on item names and tooltips?
Yes, you can use the `/give` command with a custom name parameter to create items with secret names, or use `/bookshelf font item nyctography:nyctography` to change the name of the item you're holding. The secret font will appear in the item's tooltip and name tag.
What happens if I use numbers in my secret message?
Numbers are automatically converted to specific consonants (Z for 0, B for 1, etc.), so your message stays in the secret font. If you want readers to understand these are numbers, use the hashtag (#) symbol before them to signal that the following consonants represent digits.
Can players without the mod see my secret messages?
Players without the mod will see your messages in the default Minecraft font or as garbled text, depending on how you send them. The secret font only displays correctly for players who have Nyctography installed.
