Reading a Sample
Craft a Prospector's Pick and right-click any block with it to scan the area. The pick reports what ore blocks are nearby and roughly how far away they are. Use it repeatedly while walking to triangulate a deposit before you dig.
When you break an ore block you may obtain a Sample version of that ore, such as a 
Hematite Sample, 
Limonite Sample, 
Malachite Sample, 
Azurite Sample, 
Bauxite Sample, 
Cassiterite Sample, 
Galena Sample, 
Sphalerite Sample, 
Teallite Sample, 
Cinnabar Sample, 
Beryl Sample, 
Autunite Sample, 
Kimberlite Sample, 
Platinum Sample, 
Gold Sample, 
Poor Gold Sample, 
Coal Sample, 
Lignite Sample, 
Bituminous Coal Sample, 
Anthracitic Coal Sample, 
Assorted Quartz Sample, 
Lapis Lazuli Sample, or 
Ancient Debris Sample. Samples are the surface clue that a full deposit sits below.
Digging the Deposit
Follow the pick's direction readings downward. Deposits generate as ore blocks such as 
Hematite, 
Limonite, 
Malachite, 
Azurite, 
Bauxite, 
Cassiterite, 
Galena, 
Sphalerite, 
Teallite, 
Cinnabar, 
Beryl, 
Autunite, 
Kimberlite, 
Platinum, 
Gold, 
Poor Gold, 
Coal, 
Lignite, 
Bituminous Coal, 
Anthracitic Coal, 
Assorted Quartz, 
Lapis Lazuli, and 
Ancient Debris. In deepslate layers the same ores appear as 
Deepslate Hematite, 
Deepslate Limonite, 
Deepslate Malachite, 
Deepslate Azurite, 
Deepslate Bauxite, 
Deepslate Cassiterite, 
Deepslate Galena, 
Deepslate Sphalerite, 
Deepslate Teallite, 
Deepslate Cinnabar,

Deepslate Kimberlite, 
Deepslate Platinum, 
Deepslate Gold,

Mine the whole cluster, not just the top block, then carry the raw ore home for processing.
