How to Gate a Crafting Recipe Behind a Stage

Recipe restrictions

Recipe locking is handled separately from item locking. Even if an item is not restricted, you can still prevent players from crafting it until they earn a stage. In the Game Stages config, find the recipe section and add the recipe's output or recipe ID under the desired stage.

When a player lacks the stage, the recipe will not appear in the crafting grid result or will refuse to craft, depending on how the pack configured it. This is the cleanest way to build progression: players can still see the recipe in JEI as a goal, but cannot actually make it yet.

Handling modded and complex recipes

For modded recipes, use the recipe's registry ID rather than the output item, because many mods register multiple recipes producing the same item. You can find recipe IDs through JEI's recipe info or by checking the mod's data files. If a recipe has variants (different shaped layouts producing the same result), list each ID you want to gate.

After editing, reload the config and test by crafting the item with and without the stage. If the recipe still crafts when it should not, verify you used the recipe ID and not the item ID, and confirm the stage name matches exactly. Recipe gating stacks with item gating, so you can lock both the recipe and the resulting item for a hard progression wall.
