Fixing Configs That Reset Every Time You Launch the Game

Why settings revert

A config that keeps resetting is a strong sign that the file is not being read successfully, so the mod falls back to defaults and often rewrites the file. Forge Config API Port itself does not cause this; it is the behavior of the mod reading its own config through the API.

Typical causes:

  • A syntax error in the file, such as a missing quote, bracket, or comma.
  • An option value outside the range the mod accepts.
  • The file was edited while the game was running.
  • The mod version changed and the old format is no longer valid.

How to recover

1. Close Minecraft fully.

2. Back up the broken config file somewhere outside the config folder.

3. Delete the original so the mod can create a fresh one.

4. Launch the game once and close it again. The regenerated file is your clean baseline.

5. Reapply your changes one section at a time, restarting between edits to find the change that breaks it.

If the file resets even when you never touched it, check your game log for read or write errors. A permissions problem or a read-only folder can also force defaults every launch.
