Fishing Real Mod FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I make fishing actually spawn live mobs instead of items?
The mod already does this by default for anything covered by its built-in datapack conversions, so just fish normally and you'll pull up entities. If a specific catch still gives you an item, that means no conversion exists for it yet and you need to add one yourself.
Where do I put my JSON files to add my own conversions?
Place them in a fishing folder inside your datapack, then run /reload so the mod picks them up instantly. The format uses an input item and a result entity id, matching the examples in the mod's documentation.
What's the exact JSON format for a conversion?
It's an object with an input containing an item, and a result containing an entity id. The result can optionally include an nbt object to control
things like variant, name, or equipment on the spawned entity.
things like variant, name, or equipment on the spawned entity. How do I make a caught fish a specific variant every time?
Add an nbt block to the result in your JSON and set the variant field to the value you want. Every catch of that input item will then spawn that exact variant instead of a random one.
Can I give a caught entity a custom name or equipment?
Yes, use the nbt section of the result to set fields like CustomName or HandItems. Whatever NBT you put there gets applied to the entity when it spawns from the fishing hook.
How do I stop a vanilla conversion, like turning salmon into a live salmon?
Override the existing entry by creating your own JSON with the same input item, then either point it at a different result or remove the conversion from the datapack. Reloading datapacks applies the change immediately.
Can I fish up mobs from other mods or datapacks?
Yes, as long as the entity is registered, you can reference its id in the result field. Just make sure the mod providing that entity is loaded, otherwise the conversion won't resolve.
Why isn't my custom conversion working after I added the JSON?
The most common causes are a malformed JSON file, the file being in the wrong folder, or forgetting to run /reload. Check your datapack structure and the game log for parse errors.
Does this mod work with other fishing mods or loot modifiers?
It hooks into the fishing loot result, so it converts whatever item would have been fished up. If another mod replaces the loot table entirely, the conversion only applies to items that still pass through the normal fishing result.
Will having lots of conversions or spawning live mobs hurt performance?
Conversion lookups are cheap since they're just datapack entries, but spawning many live entities instead of items can add up if you fish a lot. Keep an eye on entity counts in areas where players fish frequently.
