How to Build a Working Elevator with Vertical Rails

Vertical rails let you move carts straight up and down, which is the fastest way to connect mine levels without a spiral of normal track. The key is that a cart only climbs when it has momentum, so you need a powered launch at the bottom.

Setting Up the Shaft

Place your vertical rail column first, then cap the bottom with a short run of horizontal track. Put a powered rail at the base of the climb and feed it redstone from a lever or button. Push or launch a cart into the vertical section and it will ride upward on its own momentum. At the top, place a normal rail so the cart can roll off onto your landing platform.

Making It Reliable

Carts lose speed as they climb, so keep the vertical run short or add a second powered rail partway up if the mod supports boosters along the column. Always leave a one-block gap or a catch rail at the top so the cart does not overshoot and fall back down. For a two-way elevator, mirror the setup at the top with its own powered rail and lever. Test with an empty cart before riding it yourself, and keep the shaft clear of torches or blocks that could stop the cart mid-climb.
