Troubleshooting Sounds That Won't Play or Won't Vary

Nothing Plays At All

Silence usually means a path or name mismatch, not a broken mod. Confirm the .ogg files exist at the exact path your properties file references, and that the sound event name matches the one the entity actually triggers. A single typo in a folder or file name is the most common cause.

The Same Sound Keeps Playing

If variation never kicks in, your candidate list is probably not being read. Check that the properties file is in the location the mod scans, that entries are numbered sequentially starting from the expected index, and that you reloaded resources after editing. Editing files while the game is running does nothing until a reload.

Sounds Cut Off or Sound Wrong

Clips that are too long, too loud, or encoded oddly will stand out badly. Re-export them at a consistent volume and length, and avoid mixing very different pitches in one candidate set. If only some clips fail, isolate the bad file by testing it alone.

General Checklist

  • Correct folder and file names
  • Sequential, correctly formatted entries
  • Valid .ogg encoding
  • Resource reload after every change
  • No conflicting pack overriding the same sound
