How to Add Sound Variation to a Mob Using OptiFine Property Files

Understanding the File Layout

Entity Sound Features reads OptiFine-style .properties files to decide which sound plays for a given entity action. You point a properties file at a set of candidate sounds, and the mod picks between them at runtime instead of always firing the same vanilla sound.

Writing the Rules

1. Locate the entity's sound definition you want to override (for example, the ambient or hurt sound of a mob).

2. Create a properties file in the resource pack or config location the mod expects, named after the entity and the sound event you are targeting.

3. Inside, list your candidate sound files as numbered entries, following the same key.index=value convention OptiFine uses for random textures and sounds.

4. Keep every referenced .ogg file in the matching sounds folder so the game can resolve the path.

5. Reload resources (F3+T) and trigger the action in-game to confirm variation.

Testing Tips

Trigger the sound several times in a row. If you always hear the same clip, your entries are likely misnumbered or the file path is wrong. If you hear nothing, the sound event name does not match what the entity actually calls — double-check the vanilla sound event before renaming anything.
