Death Quotes Mod FAQ
12 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I get the death quotes file to show up?
Just run the game once with the mod installed; if no quotes file exists, the mod creates a default one for you in the config folder. Look for deathquotes.txt inside your /config directory.
Where is the deathquotes.txt file located?
It lives in your Minecraft /config folder, named deathquotes.txt. On a server, that's the server's config folder, not your client's.
How do I add my own death quotes?
Open deathquotes.txt and add your lines following the same format as the existing entries, then save the file. The mod reads the file, so your new quotes will appear on the next death without needing to reinstall anything.
Can I replace all the default quotes with my own?
Yes, you can delete the default entries and put only your own lines in deathquotes.txt. The mod will use whatever is in the file, so a fully custom list works fine.
How many quotes come with the mod by default?
The default file ships with a large built-in set of quotes (over 600). If you want fewer or different ones, just edit or clear the file.
Do death quotes show for every death cause, like lava or falling?
Yes, the mod announces your death and the circumstances in chat, such as dying while swimming in lava, and places a random quote above that message. Any death that produces a chat message gets a quote.
How do I share my quotes file with friends or on a server?
Just give them your deathquotes.txt and have them drop it into their /config folder, replacing the existing one. On a server, put the shared file in the server's config folder so all players see the same quotes.
How do I disable or silence death quotes?
You can empty the quotes file or remove its contents so no quote is shown, or remove the mod entirely if you want the vanilla death message back. There is no separate in-game toggle, so editing the file is the way to silence it.
Will the mod work on a server with other players?
Yes, it's designed to announce deaths to all players in chat, so it works well on multiplayer servers. Make sure the quotes file is on the server so everyone sees the same quotes.
Does this mod cause lag or performance problems?
No, it only reads a text file and prints a chat message on death, so the performance impact is negligible. If you notice issues, check that your quotes file isn't enormous or malformed.
My quotes aren't showing up after I edited the file. What went wrong?
Make sure you saved the file in the correct /config location and that the format matches the existing entries. A malformed line or wrong file path is the usual cause of quotes not appearing.
Can I use color codes or special formatting in my quotes?
The mod reads plain text lines, so stick to normal text unless the file's existing entries show formatting codes. If you're unsure, copy the style of the default quotes exactly.
