Dead Air FAQ
10 questions players actually ask, answered.
How do I turn on my radio for the first time?
Hold a walkie-talkie in your hand and press N or right-click to open the tuning menu. The radio will start scanning for nearby towers automatically once you open it.
Why can't I hear any stations even though I'm near a tower?
Make sure the tower is activated—standard towers turn on instantly, but fenced and overrun towers need you to right-click their radio panel first. Also check that you're within 375 blocks of an active tower, as signal drops completely beyond that range.
What does the static noise mean?
Static indicates weak signal strength, which happens when you're far from a tower, during bad weather, or when line-of-sight to the tower is blocked. Move closer or find higher ground to improve reception.
How do I unlock new stations?
Walk near an active radio tower with your radio turned on and tuned to any frequency. New stations will unlock automatically as you get in range of different towers.
Can I add my own music to the mod?
Yes—add .ogg music files to the configuration folder and create a custom station entry in the config. The mod will load your tracks and make them available as a new station.
Does the music keep playing if I put the radio away?
The radio only plays while it's in your hand, hotbar, or inventory. Once you drop it or move it to a chest, the music stops.
What's the difference between standard, fenced, and overrun towers?
Standard towers broadcast immediately when you get near them. Fenced and overrun towers are inactive until you right-click their radio panel to activate them, giving you control over which towers you want to use.
How do I call an airdrop?
Open your radio tuning menu and look for the airdrop calling option—this will send your coordinates to the chat and trigger a supply drop at your location. Check the field guide for exact menu navigation.
Can I spawn towers in Creative mode or with commands?
Yes—use `/dead_air spawntower [x] [y] [z]` to generate a standard, fenced, or overrun tower at your current location or specific coordinates.
Will this mod work with other radio or music mods?
Dead Air is designed to extend Apocalypse Structures and Walkie-Talkie mods specifically. Compatibility with other radio mods depends on how they handle audio channels, so test in your world to be sure.
