Data Attributes Mod FAQ
18 questions players actually ask, answered.
Does this mod do anything by itself?
No. Data Attributes Mod is a framework that overhauls how entity attributes work in Minecraft, but it requires a datapack to actually change anything. Install it alongside datapacks designed to use it.
What's the difference between regular attributes and follow-on attributes?
Regular attributes are independent values like max health or attack damage. Follow-on attributes automatically calculate based on other attributes—for example, armor penetration could scale with your strength stat, creating stat dependencies like in RPGs.
How do I create a custom attribute in a datapack?
You define custom attributes in your datapack's attribute JSON files, specifying the attribute ID, default value, minimum, maximum, and whether it's a follow-on attribute. The mod then exposes these to entities so you can apply them to mobs or players.
Can I make mob difficulty scale with attributes?
Yes. You can use datapacks to tie mob stats like damage and health to custom difficulty attributes, then adjust those attributes per mob or per region to create scaling challenges without changing mob types.
Will this mod work with other mods that add custom mobs?
Generally yes, since Data Attributes Mod works at the entity attribute level. However, if another mod hardcodes its mob stats without using the attribute system, those mobs won't benefit from your attribute changes.
What happens if I remove the mod but keep the datapack?
The datapack will fail to load because the mod that interprets it is gone. Remove or disable the datapack as well to avoid errors.
How do I debug why my custom attributes aren't working?
Check your datapack's JSON syntax first, then use the mod's debug tools or commands to verify the attribute is registered and applied to the correct entities. Check the logs for parsing errors.
Can I use this mod on a multiplayer server?
Yes. Install the mod on the server and add your attribute datapacks to the server's datapack folder. All players will need the mod installed to see the changes properly.
Does this mod affect performance?
The mod itself has minimal impact, but poorly optimized datapacks—especially those with complex follow-on attribute chains or frequent recalculations—can cause lag. Test your datapack's performance with many entities.
Can I modify player attributes or just mob attributes?
You can modify both. Player attributes can be customized through datapacks, though be careful with balance changes that affect PvP or progression.
What does the Data Attributes Mod do?
It overhauls Minecraft's entity attribute system to be more dynamic and include follow-on attributes, and exposes entity attributes to datapacks so pack makers can customise them. By itself, it adds no in-game content.
Does the Data Attributes Mod add any content on its own?
No. By itself, the mod adds no in-game content; it only allows entity attributes to be customised or added using datapacks.
What version of Minecraft is the Data Attributes Mod for?
It supports Minecraft 1.18.2, 1.19, and 1.19.2.
What mod loader does the Data Attributes Mod use?
It uses Fabric, and it works on both the client and server.
What dependencies does the Data Attributes Mod need?
It requires Fabric API version 0.76.0 or higher.
Is the Data Attributes Mod compatible with AttributeFix?
No. Data Attributes is not compatible with AttributeFix because they have the same capabilities.
Can you customise entity attributes with datapacks in Data Attributes?
Yes. The mod exposes entity attributes to a datapack system, letting servers and pack makers customise every aspect of the entity attribute system.
Where can I find documentation for the Data Attributes Mod?
Documentation is on the mod's wiki, and the author recommends reading it before using the mod.
