Check the Basics First
The most common reason /trigger flight fails is that the diamond shovel is not actually in your off-hand. Open your inventory and confirm the shovel sits in the shield/off-hand slot, not the main hotbar. On Java Edition, pressing F swaps your main-hand item into the off-hand — use that to be sure.
Command and Permission Issues
If the shovel is correctly placed but nothing happens, the problem is usually one of these:
- Cheats are disabled.
/triggerrequires cheats to be enabled on the world. If you are on a server, the server must allow the command for your permission level. - You typed the command wrong. It is
/trigger flight— no extra arguments, no capital letters needed, but spelling must match exactly. - Another datapack or mod is overriding the trigger. Conflicting datapacks that use the same trigger name can block the effect.
- **You are already under a levitation or slow-falling effect.
Still Stuck?
Try these steps in order: remove and re-equip the shovel, log out and back in, then test in a fresh superflat world with cheats on. If it works there but not on your main world, a datapack conflict is the likely culprit. Check your datapacks folder for anything that also defines a flight trigger.
