How to Navigate Back Out of YUNG's Better Caves Without Getting Lost
The interconnected, branching layout that makes YUNG's Better Caves fun to explore is also what gets players hopelessly lost. The fix is to treat every trip underground as a mapping exercise, not a wander.
Set up a trail before you go deep
- Place torches on a consistent side of the tunnel as you descend, for example always on your right. To get out, keep the torches on your left.
- At every junction, place a distinctive marker block and a torch so you can recognize the split when you return.
- Dig a small staircase back to the surface early, before you are deep, so you always have an emergency exit.
Use coordinates and a mental map
- Write down or remember your entrance coordinates. If you get turned around, you can dig straight up or toward those numbers.
- Note the elevation of your entrance. Caves descend quickly, and knowing you need to climb tells you which way is out.
- When a tunnel branches, pick one direction and fully explore it before returning to the junction. Do not half-explore multiple branches.
If you are already lost
Stop moving and listen. Water and lava are audible through walls and can orient you. Then dig a staircase upward in a straight line until you break the surface. It costs blocks but always works. Carry spare pickaxes and
blocks specifically for this.
