How to Find and Explore the Different Cave Types Added by YUNG's Better Caves

YUNG's Better Caves replaces the vanilla cave generator with several distinct cave archetypes, and each one has its own shape, scale, and feel. Knowing which type you are standing in tells you how to navigate it.

Recognizing the main cave types

  • Large open caverns are tall, wide, and often interconnected. They branch into each other, so they are the easiest to travel through and the best for finding exposed ores on the walls.
  • Tunnel-style caves are narrower, winding, and more claustrophobic. They tend to snake rather than open up, so bring torches and expect dead ends.
  • Lava and water features appear inside these systems. Lava lakes sit at low elevations, and water can flow down from the surface into cave mouths.

Because the generator produces interconnected systems, a single entrance often links several cave types together. Follow the largest open space you can see; it usually leads to a junction rather than a dead end.

Practical exploration tips

  • Light every junction as you pass it. The branching layout makes it very easy to lose your way back.
  • Mark your entrance with a distinctive block or a torch pattern so you can find the way out.
  • Carry a water bucket. Tall caverns mean long falls, and water lets you descend safely.
  • Bring plenty of torches or a light source; the open caverns are large enough that mobs spawn in unlit corners you cannot see.

If you want a specific cave type, dig downward from the surface rather than wandering. Cave mouths that break the surface are the most reliable entry points.
