Maximize Parallax Depth and Surface Detail
Understand Parallax Mapping
Parallax mapping creates the illusion of bumpy, uneven surfaces by shifting textures based on viewing angle. Blocks like
cobblestone,
gravel, and raw ore appear three-dimensional rather than flat. The effect is strongest when viewed at shallow angles.
Position Yourself to See Depth
Parallax works best when you're looking at blocks from an angle rather than straight-on:
- Walk along a cobblestone path at eye level to see the bumpy texture shift
- Look at
stone walls from the side rather than directly ahead - Observe raw ore blocks from multiple angles to notice surface variation
- Climb stairs and look down at block surfaces for dramatic depth effects
Combine Parallax with Lighting
Depth becomes most visible under directional lighting:
- Build structures where sunlight hits surfaces at an angle
- Use lanterns to cast side-lighting across textured blocks
- Create shadowed areas next to bright areas to emphasize surface bumps
- Avoid overhead lighting, which flattens the parallax effect
Pair with Complementary Materials
Place highly detailed blocks (cobblestone, gravel) next to smooth blocks (polished stone, ice) to highlight the contrast. This makes the parallax depth more noticeable and visually striking.
