How to Tell Pistons from Sticky Pistons and Read Observer State
Piston vs sticky piston at a glance
In vanilla, a piston and a sticky piston look nearly identical from most angles, which is painful when you inherit a build or return to an old one. XK Redstone Display marks the difference on every surface of the block, so you can identify which type you are looking at without pushing it or testing it.
Verifying a piston door or farm
1. Walk around the mechanism and check each piston's marker. If a section of a door retracts when it should stay extended, a sticky piston may have been swapped for a regular one, or vice versa.
2. Confirm the facing of each piston as well — the display shows which way the head extends, so you can catch a piston that was placed one rotation off.
3. For flying machines and slime-block contraptions, every piston type matters. Scan the whole machine and correct any mismatches before powering it, since a single wrong piston can tear the build apart.
Reading observer direction and state
Observers detect changes on one face and output from the opposite face, and getting this backwards is a classic mistake. The display shows both the detecting face and the output face, plus whether the observer is currently pulsing.
1. Point the detecting face at the block or space you want to monitor.
2. Confirm the output face connects to the circuit you want to trigger.
3. Watch the state indicator while you cause a change — if it never pulses, the observer is watching the wrong face.
