Set up a Wooden Hopper item sorter

Basic sorting setup

Wooden Hoppers work well for low-throughput sorting systems. Since they process one item every 16 ticks (by default), they're ideal for organizing small quantities of items without overwhelming your storage.

How to build it

1. Place a Wooden Hopper above a container (chest, barrel, or another hopper).

2. Position item sources above the Wooden Hopper—this can be a vanilla hopper, a dropper, or items dropped on top.

3. The Wooden Hopper will pull one item at a time into its single slot, then push it down into the container below.

4. To sort multiple item types, chain several Wooden Hoppers side-by-side, each feeding into a different container.

Tips

  • Use Wooden Hoppers in series to create a gentle, controlled flow of items. This prevents item backup and loss.
  • Combine with vanilla hoppers for faster throughput where needed—use Wooden Hoppers only where you want to slow down processing.
  • The single-slot design means items won't stack, making it easier to manage one item type at a time.
  • If pulling from inventories is disabled in your config, items must be dropped or fed via hopper from above.
