How to Keep Your Nametag Visible in Third Person View

In third-person mode, vanilla Minecraft hides your own nametag because the camera is detached from your head. This mod restores it so you can always identify your character, which is especially useful in crowded multiplayer areas, on servers with many similar skins, or when recording.

Switching to Third Person

Press F5 to cycle camera modes. The first press moves you to third person behind the player, the second moves to front-facing third person, and the third returns to first person. With the mod installed, your nametag should render above your character in both third-person modes.

Verifying It Works

  • Stand still and look at your character. The nametag should sit above your head exactly as another player's would.
  • Move around; the nametag should follow your character smoothly and scale with distance like normal nametags.
  • If you see other players' nametags but not your own, the mod is not loaded or is being overridden.

Troubleshooting

  • Some minimap and waypoint mods draw their own labels over players. If your name appears twice or is hidden, check those mods' settings for a "hide own nametag" or "player labels" option.
  • Shaders and rendering mods generally do not remove nametags, but very aggressive HUD-hiding configurations can. Test with shaders disabled to isolate the cause.
  • On servers, nametag display can be affected by server-side plugins that hide names. The mod cannot override a server that deliberately suppresses nametags.
