Running the Vulkan Renderer on Linux (Including Wayland)

Confirm Your Linux Vulkan Stack

The mod advertises native Linux support, including Wayland, but it depends entirely on a working Mesa or proprietary driver stack. Before troubleshooting Minecraft, verify Vulkan works system-wide.

1. Install the Vulkan loader and your GPU's ICD. On most distros this means packages like vulkan-icd-loader plus vulkan-radeon (AMD) or nvidia-utils (NVIDIA).

2. Run vulkaninfo and confirm your GPU appears with API version 1.2 or higher.

3. For AMD, ensure you are on a recent Mesa release — older Mesa may only expose Vulkan 1.1.

4. For NVIDIA, use the proprietary driver; Nouveau's Vulkan support is limited.

Launching Under Wayland

Wayland sessions work, but the launcher and GLFW windowing layer must negotiate the right backend. If the game fails to open a window or crashes immediately:

  • Try launching with the SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland or GLFW_PLATFORM=wayland environment variable, depending on your launcher.
  • If that fails, fall back to an X11/XWayland session to confirm the mod itself works, then retest Wayland.
  • Check latest.log for the Vulkan device selection line and any surface-creation errors.

If Vulkan works in vulkaninfo but Minecraft still crashes, the issue is usually the windowing layer, not the renderer.
