How to Check If Your GPU Actually Supports Vulkan Before Launching

Verify Vulkan Support on Your System

Before troubleshooting the mod, confirm your hardware and drivers expose a Vulkan 1.2+ device. The mod will refuse to initialize or fall back to OpenGL if it cannot find a compatible Vulkan loader and physical device.

1. Open a terminal (Linux/macOS) or Command Prompt/PowerShell (Windows).

2. Run vulkaninfo (part of the Vulkan SDK or vulkan-tools package). If the command is not found, install the Vulkan tools for your OS first.

3. Scan the output for apiVersion under the GPU section. You need a value of at least 1.2.

4. Look for the device name (e.g. your AMD or NVIDIA GPU). If only a software renderer like llvmpipe or SwiftShader appears, the mod will not use your real GPU.

Interpreting the Results

If vulkaninfo lists your GPU with a 1.2+ API version, the mod has a valid target. If it errors with "Vulkan Loader not found" or lists no devices, update your GPU drivers from your vendor (AMD Adrenalin, NVIDIA Game Ready/Studio, or your Linux distro's Mesa package). On Linux, also confirm the vulkan-icd-loader and your GPU's ICD (e.g. vulkan-radeon or nvidia-utils) are installed. Once vulkaninfo succeeds, launch Minecraft normally — the mod will pick up the device automatically.
