Fixing a Tool Trim That Will Not Apply

Common Causes

If your Smithing Table refuses to produce a trimmed tool, it is almost always one of a few issues. Walk through these checks in order.

Checklist

1. Wrong slot order. The template goes in the left slot, the tool in the middle, and the trim material in the right. Swapping any of these will leave the output empty.

2. Invalid template. Only armor trim templates work. A random item in the template slot will not be accepted.

3. Invalid material. The trim material must be one the game recognizes — for example gold, iron, diamond, netherite, redstone, lapis lazuli, amethyst shard, emerald, quartz, or copper ingot. Random blocks or ingots that are not trim materials will not work.

4. Tool already trimmed with the same combo. If the tool already has that exact pattern and material, there is nothing to change, so the output may stay empty.

5. Mod not loaded or version mismatch. If no tool at all can be trimmed, confirm the mod is actually active in your mod loader and that it matches your Minecraft version.

If It Still Fails

Try a different tool (for example, a plain iron pickaxe) with a known-good template and material. If that works, the problem is with your original tool or ingredients. If nothing works, the mod is likely not loading correctly and you should check your mod list and logs.
