Getting Started with Tool Progression
Early Game Tool Management
Tough Environment Mod makes primitive tools wear out quickly and break blocks inefficiently. Wooden and stone pickaxes have reduced durability, so plan your mining carefully.
When you mine stone or ore with weak tools, you won't get full blocks. Instead, you'll collect shards, pebbles, dust, and loose stones. These fragments can be mortared together to reconstruct usable stone blocks, or used in crafting.
Upgrade to better tools as soon as possible—higher-tier pickaxes mine faster and yield proper materials. Some blocks require specific tool types to break at all, so having the right gear matters. Blocks also break in multiple stages with primitive tools, slowing your progress intentionally.
This system forces you to think ahead about which tools to craft and when to upgrade, making early survival more strategic and resource-conscious.
