Building an Outdoor Mushroom Farm That Works in Daylight

Why This Works Now

Normally a mushroom farm needs a roof, a dark room, or a shaded canopy to stop the mushrooms from popping. This mod removes the light requirement, so you can build the whole farm in the open and harvest it under the sun.

Layout

1. Clear a flat area and lay down a solid floor of dirt, podzol, or mycelium. Mycelium is the classic choice because it also spreads, but plain dirt works fine.

2. Space your planting spots. Mushrooms do not need gaps to survive, but leaving one block between them makes harvesting and replanting faster.

3. Place your mushrooms by right-clicking each spot. Because light no longer matters, you can plant the entire field in one pass without worrying about which tiles are shaded.

4. Add a fence or wall around the plot if you want to keep it tidy, but it is not required for the mushrooms to survive.

Harvesting and Replanting

  • Break mushrooms with your hand or any tool. They drop as items you can collect.
  • Replant immediately from your inventory to keep the farm productive.
  • If you want more mushrooms from the same spot, use bone meal on a placed mushroom to trigger the vanilla spread behavior, then harvest the new ones.
  • Keep a chest nearby for storage so you are not running back and forth.
