Using Silent Lib's NBT Output to Debug a Modded Item or Block

The sl_nbt command is a practical debugging tool. Instead of digging through save files, you can read an object's NBT live in-game.

Step-by-step debugging

1. Place or hold the object you want to inspect.

2. Run /sl_nbt targeting it (held item, looked-at entity, or block coordinates).

3. Read the formatted tree in chat.

4. Note the exact tag names and values you need.

Common things to check

  • Renamed items: look under display for the Name tag. If a name is missing, the rename did not apply.
  • Enchantments: the Enchantments list shows each enchantment id and level. Useful when an anvil or modded enchanter behaves oddly.
  • Block entities: machines and containers store their contents and state in a BlockEntityTag or similar compound. Inspect it to see stored items, energy, or progress values.
  • Entities: check Health, Attributes, and Pos to confirm a mob spawned or moved as expected.

Comparing before and after

Run the command, change one thing (rename, enchant, insert an item), then run it again. Diffing the two outputs tells you exactly which tag changed. This is far more reliable than guessing, and it works for any modded object that stores NBT, not just SilentChaos512 mods.
