How to Use Potions of Decay Effectively in Combat

Choose the Right Variant

Potions of Decay come in normal, long, and strong forms, plus splash and lingering versions. For direct combat, a strong Potion of Decay deals more Wither damage per tick but for a shorter time, while a long variant spreads the damage over a longer window. Against high-health mobs, the long variant often wins because Wither bypasses regeneration and armor. Against weaker mobs, a strong splash potion finishes them quickly.

Apply It at Range

Splash Potions of Decay let you apply the effect without getting close, which is ideal against dangerous melee mobs. Throw one at a group to soften them up before engaging. Lingering Potions of Decay create a cloud that keeps applying Wither to anything standing inside, making them excellent for area denial or trapping mobs in a corridor.

Combine with Arrows of Decay

For sustained ranged pressure, use Arrows of Decay with a bow. Each hit refreshes the Wither effect, so you can keep a boss or tanky mob decaying while you reposition. Pair this with a shield to block incoming arrows from Rewithered's bow-wielding wither skeletons. Remember that Wither can kill you too, so avoid standing in your own lingering clouds and do not shoot yourself with your own tipped arrows.
