How to Choose the Right Wood Type for Each Build Style

Because Realistic Woods gives each wood species distinct grain and color character, picking the right species matters more than it did in vanilla. Think of each type as a material with its own personality.

Match Species to Structure

  • Pale, low-contrast woods suit large surfaces where you want the grain to do the work without shouting. Use them for floors, ceilings, and big wall fields.
  • Darker, warmer woods read as heavier. Reserve them for beams, door frames, support posts, and furniture so they look load-bearing.
  • Species with strong color variation work best in small doses. A single accent wall or a roof edge in a high-variation wood looks intentional; a whole house in it looks chaotic.

Build a Palette Before You Build

1. Pick two species: one dominant, one accent.

2. Place a few blocks of each next to each other in the world and walk around them in different light.

3. Add a third species only if it clearly separates from the other two at a distance.

Coordinate With Non-Wood Blocks

Stone, brick, and terracotta have their own texture density. If your wood has heavy grain, pair it with smoother stone; if your wood is subtle, you can afford rougher masonry. The goal is contrast in texture, not competition.
