How to Troubleshoot Bone Meal Not Spawning Flowers

Common Causes

If bone meal isn't producing flowers the way you expect, the problem is usually the block, the blacklist, or the game not having reloaded your config changes.

Checks to Run

1. Confirm you're applying bone meal to grass or dirt with empty space above. Bone meal on other blocks won't spawn flowers.

2. Make sure the target block isn't already covered by a flower or plant. Occupied spots can't receive new spawns.

3. Open blacklist.txt and check whether the flower you want is marked with !. If it is, remove the exclamation mark.

4. Verify your blacklist entries use correct registry names. A typo means the line does nothing, but a correct entry for your favorite flower will silently block it.

5. Reload or restart the game after editing the blacklist. Changes made while running often don't apply until reload.

6. Check for conflicting mods that also alter bone meal behavior. Two mods touching the same mechanic can override each other.

If Flowers Spawn but Not the One You Want

  • The pool is random across all allowed flowers, so rarity is expected. Blacklist others to shrink the pool.
  • Confirm the flower exists in your mod set and isn't disabled elsewhere.
  • Test in a fresh, empty area to rule out nearby blocks interfering with spawn placement.
