How to Make Footsteps Quieter for Sneaking and Specific Surfaces
A common goal is making the player harder to hear: quieter steps while sneaking, or softer audio on noisy surfaces like gravel and wood. Presence Footsteps is context-aware, so the surface you walk on drives the sound, but you can still tune the result.
Tuning sneak and surface audio
In the mod config, look for options that scale volume by movement state or by material. If a sneak-volume multiplier exists, lower it so crouch-walking is noticeably softer than normal walking. For surfaces, check whether individual material volumes can be adjusted; if so, reduce the loud ones (gravel, leaves, metal) and leave quiet ones alone. If per-material control is not exposed, the practical approach is lowering the overall footstep volume and accepting that all surfaces scale together.
Practical in-game habits
Because the mod reacts to the block underfoot, you can also just choose your path. Walk on wool, carpet, or dirt paths instead of gravel when you want to be quiet. Placing carpet or wool over a noisy floor changes the material the mod reads and therefore the sound it plays.
Testing your setup
Build a short test strip with
one block of each material you care about, then walk and sneak along it after each config change. This makes it obvious which surfaces still stand out.
