How to Configure Presence Footsteps for Servers and Multiplayer

On multiplayer, footstep audio behaves differently because you hear other players and they hear you. Getting it right means balancing your own client settings against what the server sends.

Client-side settings that matter

Presence Footsteps is primarily a client mod, so most tuning happens locally. In the config, look for options separating your own footsteps from other entities' footsteps. Lowering other players' footstep volume reduces clutter in busy areas like spawn or a shared base, while keeping your own steps audible for feedback. If there is a distance or attenuation option, reducing it makes distant players quieter without silencing nearby ones.

What the server controls

If the server does not have the mod or its assets, other players may still hear vanilla steps, and you may hear vanilla steps from them. That is normal and not a bug. You cannot force the mod's sounds onto other clients from your side.

Performance and crowded areas

Many players moving at once means many footstep events. If you notice stutter in crowded areas, lower the volume or disable other-entity footsteps entirely, and reduce any max-sounds or concurrency option the config exposes. Test in a quiet area first, then join a busy one to compare.
