How to Add Custom Tooltips and Change Item Rarity in Polytone
Two of Polytone's most-used features are adding or removing item tooltips and changing an item's rarity color. Both are done through Polytone's config files in your resource pack or datapack, not through code.
Adding and Removing Tooltips
Create a config entry that targets an item by its ID. You can append extra lines of text below the normal tooltip, which is useful for labeling custom items, adding lore, or warning players about a mechanic. You can also remove existing tooltip lines — handy when a mod adds clutter you do not want. Text supports color codes, so you can style each line differently.
Changing Item Rarity
Rarity controls the color of the item's name in the tooltip and inventory. Polytone lets you reassign an item to a different rarity tier than the one it ships with. This is purely cosmetic but very effective for making a custom item feel legendary without touching its stats.
Order of Operations
If you both add tooltips and change rarity on the same item, set them in the same config block so they load together. After editing, reload resources and hover the item in your inventory to verify. If nothing changes, confirm the item ID is correct and that your file sits in the folder Polytone actually scans.
