How to Add a Text Shadow to Nametags for Better Readability
Why Use the Shadow
Nametags in Minecraft can vanish against snow, sky, or bright builds. Poly Nametag Mod includes a text shadow option that draws a dark outline behind each character, making names legible no matter what's behind them. This is one of the simplest tweaks in the mod and pairs well with the background feature.
Enabling the Shadow
Open the mod's configuration screen. On Fabric or Quilt this is usually via Mod Menu; on Forge or NeoForge it's the mods list, or the mod may register its own keybind to open settings. Inside, find the nametag rendering or appearance section and look for a toggle labeled "Text Shadow," "Shadow," or "Drop Shadow." Turn it on. If a live preview exists, you'll see the outline appear instantly. If not, apply the setting and exit the menu, then look at a nearby player to verify.
Fine-Tuning Readability
If the shadow alone isn't enough, combine it with the background option: enable the background and choose a dark, semi-transparent color. The shadow plus a subtle panel handles almost any backdrop. If the mod offers a shadow intensity or offset control, keep it small — a heavy shadow can make thin fonts look muddy. In singleplayer, turn on "show own nametag" so you can judge the effect on yourself without needing a second player.
Notes
- Shadow is a client-side visual change; it affects how you see tags.
- Works best with the background feature for maximum contrast.
